A row has been sparked by michael Owen’s new book on interpersonal media involving the England striker along with Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer.
Among the cutting lines in the book comprises Owen’s claim that his transfer from Real Madrid into the Magpies in 2005 was a”down step” and the 1 move he”really regrets”.
The pair exchanged barbed tweets since the story broke on Tuesday – but what’s the background of their feud?
In Reboot – My Life, My Time, which has been serialised in the Daily Mirror, Owen also goes into detail about his connection with Newcastle’s fans during an injury-hit bout with the team, which finished with him linking Manchester United following the Magpies’ relegation to the Championship in 2009.
“I ought to have followed my gut instincts, I did not wish to go there – my heart was set on a return to Liverpool,” explained Owen – who had left Anfield for Real in 2004 – of his move to St James’ Park.
Even the 39-year-old former England captain claimed Newcastle were”only a major club in the sense it has plenty of fans and a significant arena”. Ouch.
Match of the Day pundit Shearer, the Magpies’ record goalscorer, reacted on social media.
Tweeting a chunk of Owen telling BT Sport in 2018 that he”could not wait to retire to the last six or seven decades” of his livelihood, Shearer posted:”Yes, Michael, we thought that also, whilst on 120K per week”

Newcastle’s relegation at 2009 seems to be the catalyst to get the strained relationship of the pair, according to Owen’s book.

He then proceeds to explain he’d been part of a comprehensive interview using BT Sport in 2018 where he’d touched upon his experiences with harm in his profession and was taken aback by how Shearer had”began ranting about it upon Twitter”.
Owen claims he needed a text dialog with Shearer following this tweet where he provided a justification after Shearer had stated Newcastle fans could be”unimpressed to listen to he didn’t enjoy playing there”.
“It went, as I suspected, precisely nowhere,” he further added.
Since the spat continuing, gary Lineker, who hosts Match of the Day alongside Shearer and working on BT Sport with Owen , afterwards acted as peacemaker.
“There seems to be a bit of background ? I like you so don’t wish to pick sides,” that he also tweeted.
