Horn vs Mundine Betting Odds
Since the announcement of the fight, Horn started as a huge gambling favorite with the majority of online betting sites. Presently, Horn is listed as a -538 favorite and Mundine is a +433 underdog according to BetOnline. Additionally, BetOnline has set the next Over/Under:
More than 9.5 rounds (-140)
Under 9.5 rounds (+120)
Before we delve deeper to the betting analysis, let us take a look at the two combatants.
A Glance at Both Fighters
At age 30, Jeff Horn (18-1-1) is the younger of the two boxers, but every bit as dangerous as his counterpart Anthony Mundine (48-8) who is 43. “The Hornet” kicked down the door to international stardom in 2017, after defeating Manny Pacquiao at Suncorp Stadium to win the WBO welterweight title. Horn would follow up that victory with an 11th round TKO over Gary Corcoran in late 2017.
In 18-0-1, Horn was flying the pound for pound best rankings and appearing like a force to be reckoned with. Unfortunately, he ran into one of the very best in Terence Crawford and suffered a TKO loss last June. “The Hornet” is seeking to rebound from that struggle and reestablish himself as a competition in the welterweight division. To do that, he’ll need to defeat a boxer that Jeff has admired for many decades.
Do not let Mundine’s age fool you. He is still very capable of knocking out Horn in this fight since he will have 28 KO victories in his profession. The former Australian rugby player has had a successful career since turning pro in 2000. Mundine has fought several weight classes and never shying away from a battle. “The Person” is a 2-time former WBA super middleweight champion, and it has gone toe-to-toe against some of the sport’s elite such as Shane Mosley, who he defeated in 2013. Mundine won his final fight in January via 2nd round KO.
Who’ll Win the Fight?
Mundine is the better fighter of the two. And, if he was 5 years younger, I believe he would easily dispatch of Horn. Jeff will seem to come out and smother Mundine with his aggressive, unorthodox style. But, we know that Mundine will be ready for this. The question is whether Mundine still has the legs to go deep into the latter rounds. We all know Mundine gets the heart and the chin to hang in there and swap shots, but father time catches up to us all.
Mundine has talked the talk, which we have come to enjoy and expect. Horn was a bit more respectful and passive of his competitor. However, that does not mean that he won’t go out there and try to take Mundine’s head off after the bell rings.
Regardless of what the boxing gambling websites listed the chances at, I believe it will be closer than expected. With that in mind, Mundine in +433 is well worth a flyer for those of you risk takers out there. In front of 50,000 rabid Australian struggle lovers, Mundine has the soul and heart to turn back the hands of time and pull off the upset. Having a puncher’s chance, taking a flyer on Mundine is a reasonable option for those that bet on boxing.
However, despite the sentimental side of me needing to watch Mundine ride into the sunset with a win in this fight, you have to go with the younger, more aggressive fighter in Horn. Unfortunately, his moneyline of -538 provides no worth and the small danger of him losing is not worth a wager.
