Sergey Kovalev has been”very anxious” to obtain recognition from the Saul Alvarez battle and will apply skill, not exceptional power against’Canelo’, says trainer Buddy McGirt.
The WBO light-heavyweight champion defends his belt against the Mexican star, who’s bidding to be a world-title holder that is four-weight , in Las Vegas on November 2.
Kovalev recently met to discuss the upcoming battle with’Canelo’, and also the renowned coach states that the Russian is eager to pull off a career-defining triumph.
“I believe boxing requires a fight like this,” McGirt told Sky Sports. “Kovalev wants a challenge, Canelo, he has beat everybody. I admire for what he is doing, Canelo . I respect it reveals a genuine winner, and I just feel that it’s likely to be a fantastic night of boxing.
“He [Kovalev] is very anxious. After he dropped to Ward and [Eleider] Alvarez there was a lot of negative things being said about himso I believe he’s out to prove the critics wrong.”
Asked if Kovalev wants to be recognized among the world’s elite, McGirt responded:”Yes, I believe so. He’s fought and I think he accomplishes it.
“He maintained the light-heavyweight branch exciting as it was not exciting.”
‘Canelo’ is pushing his own bounds as he completes his career’s weight class, however, McGirt states Kovalev won’t be reliant on the dimensions and energy which overwhelmed Anthony Yarde in last month’s stoppage triumph.
“I am not looking at us being the larger, stronger man. My intention is to be the better guy that night,” explained McGirt. “His [Kovalev’s] boxing IQ is extremely underrated.
“Canelo is a hell of a fighter, he’s very clever, his boxing IQ is high too. I really don’t think, so far as physical-wise, ” I do not think that it’s that a lot of danger for him.
“I’m not considering power. I am looking at ability and like I mentioned, I am considering being the man that night.
“Sergey’s experience is really likely to play a big role in this fight.”
