A row has been sparked by michael Owen’s new book on social media between Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer along with the England striker.
One of the cutting outlines from the book includes Owen’s claim that his transfer from Real Madrid to the Magpies at 2005 was a”downward measure” and the 1 movement he”really regrets”.
The pair exchanged barbed tweets since the story broke on Tuesday – but what is the backdrop of the feud?
In Reboot – My LifeMy Time, that is being serialised in the Daily Mirror, Owen also goes into detail regarding his connection with Newcastle’s fans through an injury-hit bout with the club, which finished with him joining Manchester United following the Magpies’ relegation to the Championship in 2009.
“I must have followed my gut instincts, I didn’t wish to go there – my heart had been set on a return to Liverpool,” explained Owen – who had left Anfield for Real in 2004 – of his go to St James’ Park.
The 39-year-old former England captain also claimed Newcastle were”just a large club in the feeling it has plenty of fans and a significant arena”. Ouch.
Match of the Day pundit Shearer, the Magpies’ record goalscorer, reacted on social media.
Tweeting a clip of Owen telling BT Sport in 2018 that he”couldn’t wait to retire for the last six or seven decades” of his livelihood, Shearer published:”Yes, Michael, we believed that also, whilst on #120K per week”
Enter Owen again, questioning Shearer’s loyalty to Newcastle…
This retort certainly got people talking, but where did this lousy blood start?
The relegation in 2009 of newcastle seems to function as the catalyst for the strained relationship of the pair, based on Owen’s publication.
Shearer was manager at the time also, heading into this season’s final day, the Magpies needed at least a draw at Aston Villa or his spell at the Premier League would return to an end.
Owen asserts he wasn’t fully fit however, with Villa 1-0 up through the own goal of Damien Duff, the striker arrived as a replacement in the 66th minute.
Newcastle could not find a reply and were condemned into the Championship, and Owen alleges Shearer was”seething” together with him and insinuated that the player”had an eye on my next contract”, with his current deal about to run out.
“I felt I was being made a scapegoat,” explained Owen.
“When you analyse it, it all makes sense. Shearer’s album as boss in the last eight games of that 2008-09 season was lost five, brought two, won you.”
Of his 49-year-old former England team-mate, Owen added:”Alan Shearer and I still haven’t talked out this face to face and that’s a shame since, as I’ve said many, many times, we had been quite good friends.”
He then goes on to explain he had been part of an extensive interview using BT Sport in 2018 where he had touched upon his adventures with trauma in his career and was taken aback by how Shearer had”began ranting about it on Twitter”.
Owen claims he needed a text conversation with Shearer following this tweet in which he provided an explanation after Shearer had stated Newcastle fans would be”unimpressed to hear he did not delight in playing there”.
“It moved , as I guessed, precisely nowhere,” he further added.
Gary Lineker, that hosts Match of the Day alongside Shearer as well as working on BT Sport acted as peacemaker as the spat continuing.
“There seems to be a little background ? I like you so do not want to pick sides,” that he tweeted.
